Discussion on measures to combat illegal fishing on the Makran coast – Journal

QUETTA: A meeting held here on Tuesday discussed measures to stop illegal fishing by foreign trawlers on the Makran coast.

Chaired by Chief Secretary of Balochistan Mathar Niaz Rana, the meeting brought together Additional Chief Secretary of the Interior Arshad Majeed, Secretary of Finance Abdul Rehman Buzdar, Secretary of Fisheries Babar Khan, Director General of Fisheries and other officials.

The meeting was informed that the Fisheries Department was having difficulty in stopping illegal fishing in Balochistan waters due to the lack of manpower and fast patrol boats.

Officials from the fisheries department, however, said that despite the difficulties encountered, the department was taking effective action against trawlers and illegal boats entering Balochistan waters to fish.

Chief Secretary Rana said the relevant agencies should take strict action against illegal trawlers and unregistered boats fishing on the Makran coast.

According to him, illegal trawlers not only deprive local fishermen of their rights, but also damage the marine life and resources of Balochistan.

Rana called on the fisheries department to improve its ability to tackle illegal fishing in Balochistan waters, saying the provincial government would give him all possible cooperation in this regard.

The meeting was informed that a boat monitoring system would be installed on the boats and that all local fishermen would be asked to ensure their boats were registered.
