Know your town: Since 1939, this Chennai shop has been selling books and buying love
I started asking people to direct me to ‘Alwar kadai’ (Alwar shop) in Mylapore, almost a kilometer away. Not a single one said they didn’t know. Finally, I reached the shop – also known as the ‘open bookstore’.
What greeted me was a large shed on the sidewalk filled with many books and no sign. Ammu Alwar, 42, daughter of RK Alwar, who previously owned the store, looked after customers.
The “open bookshop” was created in 1939 and today welcomes at least 60 customers a day. It houses books ranging from “The Camel Club” by David Baldacci and “Ponniyin Selvan” by Kalki Krishnamurthy to those on the fundamentals of JAVA. One can see books in different languages such as Tamil, English and even Sanskrit.
