Lakshwadeep begins exporting tuna to Japan

Thiruvananthapuram, June 6 (IANS) The administration of Lakshwadeep has started exporting top quality tuna to Japan via Bengaluru.

The first batch of chilled tuna was transported from Agati airport to Bengaluru on Saturday, with the administration of the Union territory teaming up with a private partner for export.

Lakshwadeep district collector S. Asker Ali told IANS: “We are planning to increase tuna exports from the islands to Japan.

The administration plans to export 5 tonnes of tuna daily from the islands to Tokyo via Bengaluru, and this chartered flight will bring all the essentials for the island from Bengaluru.

Of the 12,500 island households, 7,197 registered fishermen operate 2,158 mechanized and motorized fishing boats.

According to a study by the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI), Lakshwadeep has the potential to export 1 lakh of tonnes of tuna per month.

According to marine scientists and exporters, Lakshwadeep tuna has the least histamine, mainly due to traditional hook and line fishing methods and short fishing times.

Three large containerized ice factories with German technology were installed on the islands of Minicoy, Agatti and Amini and cold storage facilities of around 20 tonnes were provided on various islands.

The Lakshwadeep administration had organized a meeting of Lakshwadeep tuna exporters and stakeholders in Kochi and about 50 exporters from Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Goa attended.

Sashmi Food Private Ltd, a Bengaluru-based export company that has an EU-approved export plant, then volunteered to export tuna from Lakshwadeep to Tokyo.

The Lakshwadeep administration plans to facilitate the export of full-fledged tuna, both by air freight and by vessel directly operated by selected export companies after September 15. An agreement will be signed between the fishermen’s cooperative societies and the exporters.

The Lakshwadeep district collector said it would offer a better price and open up new markets for Lakshwadeep’s premium tuna.
