Mangaluru: State’s Matsya Siri fisheries scheme suspended in limbo

Mangaluru, August 24: The state government’s budget announcement to link the Matsya Siri scheme with the Center’s Matsya Sampada scheme to assist fishermen in deep-sea fishing has been uncertain and caught in confusion.

In accordance with the program, the state government had announced financial assistance of Rs 15 lac per boat as well as the contribution of the Center under the Matsya Sampada program for the construction of 100 boats. But the proposal to link the two schemes is awaiting approval from the state finance department.

Under the Matsya Sampada program of the Center for Deep Sea Fisheries, a budget of Rs 1.2 crore has been allocated for boat building while financial aid of Rs 72 lac has been announced for women and men. SC/ST and another Rs 48 lac in the general category. This scheme was upgraded by the state government to Rs 1.5 crore with the announcement of the Matsya Siri scheme and Rs 15 lac added to the scheme.

Chief Fisherman of Mangaluru Trawl Boat, Nithin Kumar, said the projects announced by the government should reach all fishermen and be implemented at the earliest. He said that other than the announcement of the Matsya Siri program, no other details were available. Mohan Bengre, a fishing chief, said all fishermen stand to benefit when the scheme is implemented.
