Outdoor recreation an $862 billion industry according to new government data

WASHINGTON, November 9, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — The U.S. Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) has released economic data for 2021 showing the powerful and positive economic impact of outdoor recreation on the U.S. economy. These new figures show that outdoor recreation generates $862 billion economic output and 4.5 million jobs. This means that the outdoor recreation economy contributes more to the US economy than oil and gas extraction, mining, and agriculture. The report includes data at the national and state level.

This is the fifth consecutive year that the BEA has published government data on this critical industrial sector. Today’s release shows how the outdoor industry, which has played a vital economic and social role throughout the pandemic, has since maintained remarkable growth and continued to support local economies.
